Educators: Getting involved in professional development is an important way to improve your teaching.  Knowing the details of the professional development opportunities can assist you in making the right choices. You may register for courses at My267.

District Leadership: Central Rivers AEA would like to offer Iowa Core Mathematics courses within your district and are now scheduling dates. The following courses are available for in-district delivery. In order to efficiently use our resources we require at least 10 teachers to hold trainings in district.  You might consider collaborating with other districts to reach these numbers.

Functional assessment in mathematics at grades PK-2

This course will help educators identify the early number concepts critical to a child’s future success with mathematics. Participants will study the book by Kathy Richardson and learn to use the series of assessments by Kathy Richardson. In the process, participants will study the intent of the Iowa Core Mathematics standards for whole numbers at grades K-2 and the Iowa Early Learning Standards for number at the PK level. more information

Iowa core mathematics: numeracy in  grades K-2

This class focuses on the pedagogical content knowledge teachers need to effectively implement Iowa Core Mathematics numeracy standards in kindergarten–grade 2. A deep understanding of whole numbers and addition/subtraction at the lower elementary grades prepares students to study multiplication/division and fractions at the upper elementary grades. A strong understanding of whole numbers and fractions builds the foundation for success with algebra. more information

Iowa core mathematics: number talks in grades K-5

This course will help educators deepen their pedagogical content knowledge for building computational fluency and number sense. Participants will study Iowa Core Mathematics and the book Number Talks: Helping Children Build Mental Math and Computation Strategies, Grades K-5 by Sherry Parrish. The coursewill focus on understanding the grade-specific expectations and cross grade-level learning progressions of Iowa Core Mathematics standards for basic facts and multi-digit computation. more information

Iowa core mathematics: teaching fractions in grades 3-6

Implementation of Iowa Core Mathematics shifts fraction instruction to lower grades for most school districts. One sixth grade standard addresses dividing fractions by fractions. Developing understanding of fraction concepts and all other fraction computation occurs in grades 3 through 5. A deep understanding of fractions in the elementary grades prepares students in grades 6 through 8 to study proportional reasoning and algebra. This professional development opportunity helps teachers understand and implement research-based strategies for teaching fractions. more information
