In order for children to be able to move seamlessly between preschool and school age settings and experience maximum success developmentally and academically, it is important that “what” children are taught and assessed on are clearly aligned. In Iowa, the Iowa Early Learning Standards form the basis for what children should learn and they are aligned with the recommended (in some cases required) assessment, Teaching Strategies GOLD. GOLD also aligns with the Common CORE state standards, assisting in a smooth transition to school age programming. Similarly, the alignment of the Iowa Early Learning Standards with the Iowa CORE standards for English/Language Arts and Math insures that what is taught in preschool is relevant and important to what will be expected in kindergarten (and later years).
